Types of Gastric Balloons
What are the different types of gastric balloons?
Here are the 4 types of intragastric balloons we use and the differences between them:
Swallowable Gastric Balloon Capsule:
Elipse Balloon
Elipse gastric balloon is a type of gastric balloon that can be swallowed with water. This high-tech gastric balloon is compressed in the form of a capsule that can be swallowed. Thus, endoscopy and anesthesia are not needed for placement. In addition to the ease of inserting the elipse gastric balloon, it does not require removal and is extremely unlikely to have side effects. When the balloon expire, which remains in the stomach for 4 months, its contents are emptied by itself and are excreted from the body. It is possible to lose 15-20 KG in 4 months. The ingestible gastric balloon, which can be inserted into people between the ages of 18-65 and with a BMI of 27-40, is a highly preferred option due to its many advantages.
6 Month Gastric Balloon:
Medsil Balloon
It is a gastric balloon that is applied by endoscopy and remains in the stomach for 6 months. 6 Months Endoscopic Balloons are ideal for people with a Body Mass Index of 27-40. It is possible to lose 15-20 KG at the end of the process. There are some disadvantages such as the insertion and removal of this gastric balloon by endoscopy, and the fact that it is more likely to develop nausea and cramps during the adjustment period.
However, since the price of a 6-Month Gastric Balloon is more affordable, it is often preferred by patients who have less weight to lose.
1 Year Gastric Balloon:
Orbera Balloon
Orbera gastric balloon, which is inserted by endoscopy and removed by endoscopy and remains in the stomach for 12 months, is a good option for patients with slightly higher weight to lose. Although it is applied to patients with a Body Mass Index above 27, it is more ideal for patients with a Body Mass Index above 30.
With Orbera balloon, 20-30 KG of weight loss can be achieved at the end of the 1 year.
Adjustable Gastric Balloon:
Spatz Balloon
Unlike other balloons, the SPATZ3 gastric balloon is a volume adjustable gastric balloon. Other gastric balloons are inflated once and remain in the volume in which they are inflated until the end of the period of use. The adjustable balloon is a balloon whose volume can be changed according to the patient's needs. It remains in the stomach for 1 year. It is inserted by endoscopy, and the adjustment process and removal process is performed by endoscopy. Spatz gastric balloon is a type of gastric balloon preferred by patients with a Body Mass Index above 30 who need to lose more weight.
